A: Your truck is throttle body injected so the gap would be .045 thats what the chilton manual calls for.
Q: Question about buying 1987 Chevy Suburban?
Last night I looked at a 1987 Chevy Suburban that my friend's dad owns. It has about 125,000 miles on it, assuming the odometer has only rolled over once.
Last night was the first night it was started in about 16 months. My friend had to use ether to get it started - he sprayed it right into the carburetor, and initially, we had a mini fire ball going! We had no problems getting it started after that.
Overall, the engine sounded very good, and the oil looked clean as well. I'm told the engine was rebuilt a few years back.
Initially, we could not get it to go into gear at all - we moved it into drive, reverse, and all the other gears and got nothing. We decided to put 2 quarts of tranny fluid in, and at first, it was grinding whenever we moved it into drive or reverse, but that stopped, and we were able to get it going.
The steering felt a little loose - I don't know if that is normal or it needed power steering fluid. We were going to put some power steering fluid in, but could not find the place where it goes in. Does anyone know where to look for this?
The body was a bit rusty, but that's ok with me. The tires looked like they were in good shape.
Based on what I've told you, are there any "red flags" with buying this thing, and is there anything else I should look for or inspect before buying it? He only wants $500 for it. Thanks for any feedback you can give.
A: Red Flags? Son you just got hit over the head with a sledgehammer!
The vehicle sounds like a Mechanical Nightmare. Save the 500.00 And
buy some GM Stock. At least You got a small chance of seeing an appreciation.
Q: 1987 chevy suburban not charging, new battery and alternator, not draining just not charging.?
Ive got a question, were there any suburban engines externally regulated in the 1980s, bc there is a plug coming out right near the alternator plug that isnt attach to anything, Im thinking if this engine is from another older sub. it may be a plug for the regulator and thats the reason why its not charging fully. I dont know much about electrical but couldnt hurt to ask right.
A: look on the alternator...............near the plug....it should be stamped.....F....for field............A ...for armature...........the field need,s a pulse charge for the alternator to charge.......usually supplied through a resistor/wire........you can cross the field to the armature terminal,s.....this will make it a one wire alternator...........it will produce..........but it,s not the right way to do this..............see the charging diagram in a chilton/hayne,s/motor,s....manual......it will illustrate the intended wiring from the factory.
Q: Where does the fusible likk go, I have a 1987 chevy suburban 6.2 diesel and the whole wiring burned up.?
I got under the sub. and found a wire burned up from a starter bolt and don't know where it goes when replacing the fusible link. anyone knows? thanks alot.
A: you can put a fusible link anywhere you need one.....normally their installed right off the battery.....mostly on the positive terminal.....not the heavy cable....the smaller one.....some have two.....for normal electrical feed & alternator charging circuit.....if in doubt....install one in each.....good luck! bye the way....all they are is a lighter guage wire......sort of like a fuse that shouldnt need replacing unless there is a crisis.
Q: A/C Recharge for an 1987 Chevy Suburban?
Hello again! What am I supposed to use to recharge the A/C on my 1987 Suburban? Everybody that I ask is not sure, and I don't want to mess anything up because I believe that all it needs is freon, but I don't know where they sell it at. But I also do know that at auto part stores, they carry R-134A recharge kits, but I don't want to just put that in my truck and mess up any chances of having A/C this summer. Please, can somebody help me soon? Thanks in advance!! ^_^
A: If your vehicle came with R12 then you need to get a retrofit kit from your local auto part store and change it over to R134. You can but one of these kits for about $40. It comes with an instuctional dvd and everything you need to recharge your ac.
Q: what is the firing order on a 1987 chevy suburban?
A: 18436572.
Q: 1987 Chevy Suburban ALTERNATOR???
I have a '87 Chevrolet Suburban and I need a new alternator, but I don't know what kind.
1987 Chev Suburban 4x4 5.7L 350 engine
not sure how much of a ton? (maybe 1/2?)
How many amps? (94, ...?)
How many ways out? (2, 4, ...?)
and what else would it say?
A: In 1987, your Sub. could have been V10-1/2ton, V20-3/4ton, or V30-1ton because it is 4x4. If it wasn't, then it would be R10, R20, or a R30. The alternator is 94 amps with 2 wires coming out of the top and one on the backside of it. That's how it is on my 1987 V10 Silverado. Also Autozone and Advance Auto Parts usually have pictures on their websites plus the prices and summaries.
Q: Help! 1987 chevy suburban 1/2 ton not charging battery. New alternator, Battery, checked grounds.?
Wait so the Exciter wire is the one from the Battery to the Alternator? if so can i replace it with the same gauge wire from a stereo i used to have? also I know the alt is internally regulated but if the engine was old i got the alt for a 1987 (which is the second one that test fine on the bench, but bad on the truck) so it may be that i thought is was an 87 when in fact the engine is older and may have a external regulator. haha this stuff is confusing. but i cant figure which fuse would be for the alt so i replaced most of them with new ones. so are there inline fuses? I tighten, cleaned, and rewired the battery terminals and grounds. still no full charging.
A: the alternator needs power on the small red ornage wire to turn on and charge if the fuse is bad there is no power on this wire and the alternator will stay off
yes also running a cable from the battery to the screw in the back of the alternator is a good idea make it 8 or 6 gauge
Q: 1987 Chevy suburban not charging,NEW alternator and battery. Not Draining, just isnt charging.?
Hey so the problem isnt fixed and im short on money. The harness must have a fault in it running to the plug in the back of the alternator. I dont know for sure. Does anyone know how much it would be to have the whole truck rewired?(couldnt hurt being it is 20 years old). But if someone thinks they know of another reason it may not be charging would be helpful. thanks.
A: Yes it is most likely a wire fault. Just run a new 14 guage wire from the back of the alt+ directly to the bat+. Move the stock wirring far away. Insure the new wire is well plumbed and of good quality. Make multiple measurements at the battery for good battery upkeep at many levels of use. The ultimate taxing is when the air and lights are at full on while the engine is idling. Power windows and seats ,during this onslot, may give rise to higher idling wants.
Q: 1987 Chevy Suburban NO POWER TO IGNITION (HELP ME :()!!!!!!?
i have power to my clock, horn, and buzzer for the door but i can NOT seem to get power to my ignition or the dash... all of the fuses are fine, i took apart and cleand the connections. and i have NO clue what else to do. Any help?
A: there is a fuse-able link wire (a wire that acts as a fuse) that runs from your starter up the back of the block to the distributor, or to a block spliter on the fire wall. check the wire completely to mack sure its not blown and check the spliters on the fire wall. sometimes the spliters will melt the plastic that holds the metal post and cause the electrical circuit to fail. i had the same problem with my 84 blazer and i experienced both of these issues.
Q: what is the mpg of a 1987 chevy suburban with a 6.2 liter turbocharged diesil?
A: mine gets 18 to22
Q: Help! 1987 chevy suburban 1/2 ton not charging battery. New alternator, Battery, checked grounds.? (Update)?
so I ran the wire from the alternator to the positive battery terminal. No Luck. So im guessing it must be something in the harness ( the wire from the harness that plugs into the alternator?) also there is a wire from alternator(batt.) to a relay or the ignition, that looks like it was repaired, what is that for?
A: The wire that looks like it might have been repaired sounds like a fusable link. You should check it for continuity and replace if it is anything other than infinity.
Q: where does the fusible llink go in a chevy 1987 diesel 6.2?
I have a 1987 Chevy Suburban Diesel 6.2 and the fusible link burned up at the starter. where does it go from the starter to where?
A: Usually up on the bulkhead,, ]firewall] !!!!!!!!!!!
Q: What do I need to do to my transmission?
I have a 1987 Chevy Suburban with a 700R transmission. It will shift fine in drive but won't do anything when put in reverse. Is this a quick and easy fix or is it in need of a rebuild?
A: If you have a "pan service" instead of a fluid "flush", the technician will drop the transmission pan. Ask him in advance to carefully check the pan contents for debris which is an indication of a failing transmission. Tell him there's no reverse gear. Another advantage is he'll change the transmission filter. But if the transmission has over 150,000 miles, you'll probably need a new remanufactured transmission from GM or http://www.jasperengines.com which are warranted for 3 years and 100,000 miles. However total cost is 3,000 dollars so you might plan to get a new car if you get tired of having no reverse.
